Re: End of the season.

Probably should have named Vela, Magnet.
Jerry’s design. Sage’s build. Attracts many people off and on the water.
Winter(snow on the ground) has arrived. 143-173 days until the beginning of the season.

End of the season.

We have had couple days of gale force NE winds and cold rain. Leaves dropping like snowflakes in a Northwoods winter blizzard. Vela now sits sheltered from the elements. Glad I put Vela to rest last Friday. The last sail was close to a perfect day. Awesome autumn colors illuminated by shafts of ligh...

Re: Another maintenance question.

Checked the padeye fitting for any burrs or edge. Feels smooth. No wear on the line where it sits slack at the pad eye when the daggerboard/drop keel is down. Guessing if the pad eye was the issue the ~1500nm of sailing relatively choppy conditions of L. Superior might result in chaff if a burr/edge...

Re: Safety Tether

A life saver. Or at least peace of mind. This season Vela and I experienced an almost knock down. Didn’t make it into the marina before getting slammed by a squall. Just had enough time to drop, tie down the sail and just hook in. If the S15 had spreaders I think they would have been close to or tou...

Another maintenance question.

Needed to replace the section of line that runs from the daggerboard/drop keel snap shackle to the block set up. My township road is a gravel/dirt mile of rumble strip. 26 round trips last season resulted in the covering of the line where it turns 90°at cabin roof to wear. I do remember to drop the ...

Re: Rudder tiller question.

Yes, but not sure on every bolt. I should know better than to over tighten bolts. Just stresses out the fitting. Decades ago worked in a bicycle shop. People would snap the then “high end” alloy connectors, stem quill bolts.... Then titanium bolts showed up. More expensive broken parts. IMHO not wor...

Winch maintenance?

This season Vela is sitting on the trailer at the marina fully exposed to rain and sun. No winch cover. Another winter boat project. Fresh water sailing, 46°46’N, limited use to pulling up the keel. What should be the maintenance schedule?

Re: Rudder tiller question.

What not to do. Over torque the bolts. Rudder deployment and lifting became stiffer. Creak and clunk when the rudder was loaded up with water pressure got worse. Spent time adjusting the torque on the bolts to more or less have equal force. No more creak and clunk. Also, the rudder drops and lifts s...

Re: D-PN, PHRF rating of the S15?

Thanks Jerry for the reply. Not into formal PHRF racing. Actually not eligible to race during Bayfield’s Race Week or series race. Too “small” a boat BS. One design would catch my interest. Couple other single-handed sailors and I play a game of follow the leader. Vela is racing against boats that a...
