Description

Renowned boat designer, Jerry Montgomery is well known in the trailer sailor community from his pocket cruiser and dingy designs of the 1970s and 1980s.  After a hiatus from the pocket cruiser building business, Jerry came back to develop the SageCat for Sage Marine.

The SageCat is sophisticated enough for an experienced sailor and simple enough for beginners. Designed to handle your adventures and get you home safely, the SageCat comes standard with a non-skid coating on all horizontal surfaces, a self-draining cockpit, transom mounted boarding ladder, a bow pulpit, and positive flotation.   Also standard is a kick-up rudder to help avoid blade or transom damage in the event of unexpected shallows. A cabin-top mounted winch allows the daggerboard to be raised and lowered quickly and easily from the cockpit.

The SageCat hull is vacuum-infused fiberglass and vinylester resin in a lapstrake style for increased strength, tracking, and wave deflection.  Her deck and house are also built with vacuum infused fiberglass, vinylester resin, and a balsa core; this strong lightweight construction saves more than 100 pounds versus a conventional layup and allows for an interior with no compression post.  The SageCat’s Hull-to-Deck joint is chemically bonded and thru-bolted on 6″ centers for strength and dependability.

The rotating mast is easily rigged, and the fat-head full batten main provides excellent performance. The mast assembly weighs approximately 20 pounds, making it easy to raise single-handedly.  225 pounds of lead ballast in the daggerboard’s bulb provides exceptional righting movement and at 800 pounds total weight for a standard boat, the SageCat will sail quickly in light airs and provide confident sailing in increasing winds.

Finished with mahogany accents, you’ll enjoy a sense of refinement in the open and airy cabin. Enjoy obstruction-free comfort in the adult-sized V-berth forward when the daggerboard is down and you’ll find comfortable seating for two just inside the companionway.  Add your personal touch with cabin cushions that are offered in a variety of colors.  Natural light and fresh air can fill your cabin with four opening stainless-steel portlights. Plentiful storage space can be found under the companionway and you’ll find two large lockers in the self-draining cockpit.  All running lines are accessible in the comfort and safety of the cockpit or companionway.

As the owner of the original SageCat 15 #000 also named s/v SageCat by the fine group at Sage Marine, I can say the build quality and sailing characteristics of this boat are amazing. I took this boat to the 2018 Florida 120 and had 5 days of great sailing while sleeping aboard at anchor each night. During the event, winds picked up to 22 knots, so tied in a reef from the cockpit within a minute. The folks at Sage Marine are awesome to work with, especially Greg who was there to answer all the questions I had concerning the rigging. My boat was shipped to me across the U.S. and the experience was flawless. Can’t recommend Sage enough.
