Winch maintenance?

#1 Post by noel » Sun Sep 01, 2019 1:29 pm

This season Vela is sitting on the trailer at the marina fully exposed to rain and sun. No winch cover. Another winter boat project. Fresh water sailing, 46°46’N, limited use to pulling up the keel. What should be the maintenance schedule?

My God! has the 15 been out for 5 years? You've probably already answered your question, but others might be interested in this info.
Every few years or when the winch gets the least bit stiff, Take it apart and clean well, and give it a light coating of a light grease; wheel bearing grease works fine but if you can get a light Teflon grease, even better. It's slicker than snot on a doorknob!

Thanks Jerry. Just downloaded the Harken 6 pdf manual. Simple winch to service. I like simple.
