Re: Safety Tether

Hindsight after a season of sailing on rock-n-roll L. Superior. Should have had a 2nd pad-eye located forward at the bow. For now will use the pulpit lifeline loops or maybe attach a loop of webbing or line through the bow cleat. Should have opted for the triple cabin top handholds (stock Cat). Even...

Re: Safety Tether

Installed by Sage Marine. Positioned behind the mainsheet block would have been a better location. No need to unhook when tacking or jibing. But that location has a few negatives. Hard to access for maintenance or replacement. Bad location if the fitting develops a leak. Tether purchased (Kong 2 leg...

Re: Questions for Jerry Montgomery

Michael Mann on Little Breeeze used a sheet-to-tiller “self steering” system. His source was John Letcher’s book, “Self steering for small sailing craft”. Local library on the search for a copy. Bit pricey for an unknow to me used book at AMZ. Should be a lighter, simpler, easier to maintain & repai...

Re: Questions for Jerry Montgomery

Picked up a copy of Michael Mann’s, “A Little Breeze to the West”. Waiting for a copy of Marlin Bree’s book “Alone Against the Atlantic” (Gerry Spiess Atlantic crossing) to show up at our local used/new bookstore in Bayfield. Impressive sailors. The limiting factor for sailing the Sage 15 on L. Supe...

Re: Questions for Jerry Montgomery

Mast step question. Pretty sure the S15’s mast is a Dwyer DM-5? Noticed at the Dwyer website at least two options for mast stepping. The Hinged Step (DH219H) used on the Sage and a Tabernacle (DH2175L). Wondering what the plus and minuses are for one vs. the other? Was going to order a couple spare ...

Re: 6 knot SOG

Knowing more doesn’t hurt. Not sure if it will make me a better sailor. Putting knowledge into real world use is always a challenge. Theoretical hull speed of the S15/SC is ~5.1 knots. Is the S15/SC considered to be on the lighter side displacement/length ratio? The boat seems to out accelerate larg...

Trailer tongue extension modification?

Right at the edge for launching without the tongue being extended. Got lazy couple sessions ago. Should of got back in the truck and backed down ~1ft. End result was Vela’s bottom side as it floated off the trailer bumped into the back end of the extension. Light bump. Just scuffed the gel coat. Won...

Re: Questions for Jerry Montgomery

Bilge keel. The style that seems to be relatively popular in Britain along the coastal regions with huge tide changes. Old memory. Sort of remember reading about the Hunter(the British boat builder) Duette, a twin fin version of the Sonata being more or less equal in performance. Fins were canted an...

Re: 6 knot SOG

Yes, single-handed. Another nice day today. 10-15 knots with stretches pushing into the upper teens. WSW veering to WNW. Off shore wind = short fetch = 1-2 ft seas couple miles out in the clean air. Needed to set the first reef. Another good L. Superior Day. Upper 70’s, blue sky and wind.

6 knot SOG

A real nice L. Superior day. 10-15knot NE with 1-4 foot seas. Air temp upper 60’s. Water temp upper 60’s. Puffy low cumulus clouds that disappeared as they drifted from land to over the water. The leeward side of Long Island was 1/2 to 1 foot chop. Vela was happily cruising along in the mid 4 to low...
